The iphone app allows users to upload photographs and videos to the service, which is often edited with various filter systems, and structured with tags and location information. An account’s content can be distributed publicly or with pre-approved fans. Users can surf other users’ content by tags and locations, and view trending content. Users can “like” images, and follow other users to include their content to a give food to.
The service was at first recognized by only allowing content to be framed in a square (1:1) aspect percentage, but these limitations were eased in 2015. The service also added messaging features, the capability to include multiple images or videos in one post, as well as “Stories”–similar to its main competition Snapchat–which allows users to create photographs and videos to a sequential supply, with each post accessible by others every day and night each.
After its start this year 2010, Instagram quickly gained level of popularity, with one million new users in 8 weeks, 10 million in a time, and in the end 800 million by Sept 2017. In Apr 2012, Facebook purchased the service for about US$1 billion in cash and stock. By Oct 2015, over 40 billion photographs have been published to the service. Although praised because of its impact, Instagram has been the main topic of criticism, especially for insurance plan and software changes, allegations of censorship, and against the law or poor content published by users.
